SIR, WHAT IS ARCHITECTURE?

WHAT IS ARCHITECTURE?

Le Corbu, FLW, van der Rohe
Well. I looked for some meanings of architecture from some great people's opinion for an early task of Theory of Architecture Part I. Just... thinking that someday I'll say my own words about What is Architecture and something else it'll be cool, don't you think? Yes. And this is some of great words saying about the meaning of Architecture maybe needed for starting a course about Architecture...

Architecture is the learned game, correct and magnificent, of forms assembled in the light.
Le Corbusier

The mother of art is architecture.
Without an architecture of our own, we have no soul of our own civilization.
A great architect is not made by way of a brain nearly so much as he is made by way of a cultivated, enriched heart.
A doctor can bury his mistakes but an architect can only advise his client to plant vines.
Organic architecture seeks superior sense of use and a finer sense of comfort, expressed in organic simplicity.

Frank Lloyd Wright on Architecture
Here's what the American architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, had to say about Architecture:
"What is architecture anyway? Is it the vast collection of the various buildings which have been built to please the varying taste of the various lords of mankind? I think not.
"No, I know that architecture is life; or at least it is life itself taking form and therefore it is the truest record of life as it was lived in the world yesterday, as it is lived today or ever will be lived. So architecture I know to be a Great Spirit....
"Architecture is that great living creative spirit which from generation to generation, from age to age, proceeds, persists, creates, according to the nature of man, and his circumstances as they change. That is really architecture."
—Frank Lloyd Wright, from In the Realm of Ideas

Frank L. Wright

All architecture is shelter, all great architecture is the design of space that contains, cuddles, exalts, or stimulates the persons in that space

Architecture is the art how to waste space.

Architects are pretty much high-class whores.
We can turn down projects the way they can turn down some clients, but we’ve got to say yes to someone if we want to stay in business.
Philip Johnson

There are three forms of visual art:
Painting is art to look at
Sculpture is art you can walk around
Architecture is art you can walk through
Dan Rice

Architecture is a social act and the material theater of human activity.
Spiro Kostof

Fashion is architecture: it is matter of proportions.
Coco Chanel

Architecture, of all the arts, is the one which the most slowly, but the most surely, on the soul.
Ernest Dimnet

An Architect is a drawer of dreams.
Grace McGarvie

Architecture is music in space, as it were a frozen music.
Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling

Writing about music is like dancing about architecture.
Laurie Anderson

Architecture starts when you carefully put two bricks together. There it begins.
Architecture is the will of an epoch translated into space.
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

This building is like a book. Its architecture is the the binding, its text is in the glass and sculpture.
Malcolm Miller

Architecture is inhabited sculpture.
Anonymous
Art is jealous mistress, and if a man has a genius for painting, poetry, music, architecture or philosophy, he makes a bad husband and an ill provider.
Ralph Waldo Emerson (American poet)

Having heard words from such a great architects like Frank L. Wright, Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, etc makes me think that Architecture world is so so spacious (do I choose a right word?) and taking so many subjects outside the architecture itself. It's like something small, but it's needed, in almost all of things, I think it's really cool and that's why I did choose to become an architect. What about you?
